In a cool turn of events, my 9 year old son loves science. It partially came about because at his former school, they used Legos in science class. I think it’s also because we started reading the Zoey and Sassafras books early on. Though my kids are currently attending school, I still have the mindset of an unschooler. Thus I bring you a science experiment by a 9 year old.
Messy Play
It’s okay to fail.
Most of the world is focused on success, which is great. We all benefit from the success of companies or individuals who have created something that improves our lives born of their own creativity, knowledge, or the special something that makes them unique. How did these amazing success stories come about? Did they have an idea and then become successful by magic?
Of course not.
Messy play is great for children. It helps build coordination, fine motor skills, and can provide a completely child-led sensory experience. Sometimes, really great photographers can make it look beautiful and that is wonderful! However, most of the time, our messy play is just that. Messy.
As delighted as children are when allowed to explore as they desire, play can quickly turn from a cute activity into an ugly, glorious mess. However, there are many messy play benefits.
Messy play is so beneficial for kids, even babies! It helps foster creativity, encourage exploration, and even helps develop fine motor skills. Children are always learning and through play is how they learn best. On days I find myself getting annoyed with my children, I find a messy activity for them. It often helps everyone get to a better place. Even me!
