The best way to encourage outdoor play in all weather is have the right gear for the day. Puddle jumping is the nearly universal rite of passage of childhood and as parents, it’s easier to embrace when children are wearing waterproof rain boots. Crocs rain boots (toddler) are lightweight and flexible. These boots have large handles, for easy on and off. The synthetic sole is non marking and textured. They are also easy to clean with cold water and mild soap. Additionally, they are lightweight, which I like. They do run narrow. Overall, they really are a good solid rain boot choice.

Bogs Kids’ Skipper Waterproof Rubber Rain Boot for Boys and Girls
Bogs for kids are really popular rain boots. They are also synthetic, but they have a leather and synthetic sole. The company says the boots have Max-Wick. which helps to move sweat away from the foot to keep it dry. They also have Dura Fresh organic bio-tech to help fight odors. They don’t smell! Bogs kids rain boots run a bit on the larger side and they hold up really well.

UGG Unisex-Baby Rahjee Boot
Ugg’s Unisex Bay Rahjee boots are 100% rubber, with a rubber sole. They also have a soft jersey lined insole, which can be a deal maker for sensitive kids. I’ve noticed they do seem to run small, so definitely check the size chart before ordering. These are a great choice for solid color, character-free toddler boots.

Hunter brand boots are a solid brand for adults and kids. These little flat sole boots have a textile lining and footbed. There are always reflective patches for times of low light visibility. For travel rain boots, I recommend to take with you what you use every day. If you don’t yet have a regular pair, try out Crocs rain boots for kids, as they are really lightweight.
Do you think rain boots are a good option during a snow day?
It’s best to invest in a good pair of snow boots. However, in a pinch, little kids can wear rain boots in the snow. First, they will need to be lined with some sort of cotton (versus the kind that are plain rubber). Second, you will want to wear thick socks. However, they will not be warm and they will also not likely fit over snow pants. Some rubber will be too stiff when it is cold outside, too. They also may not work very well in icy conditions. I would not rely on these if you’re in an area that receives harsh winter conditions.
Final Thoughts
Encouraging outdoor play in all weather will help build resilience in your children. If you’re a reluctant outdoors person like me, being outside builds your resilience, too. Buying and wearing the proper gear for the weather will help keep you and your kids outside longer. Longer is better and all time spent outside has value.
