Why buy a poncho instead of a rain jacket?
It depends on your intended usage, needs, and climate. Ponchos are lightweight and compact. Put yours into your day hiking bag, diaper bag, or car, which make them easy to carry with you all the time in case of a downpour. They can be worn in most climates, by adding or removing underneath layers for comfort. Often, they are big enough to cover children that may be with you and also caught in a downpour (your mileage may vary). It’s really easy to travel with a poncho and take along when hiking or camping. They work really well in warm climates, but may leave you a bit wet if there is a lot of wind.
A rain jacket will usually be a little more bulky, depending on the materials it is made from, but the sleeves are going to be longer and will always cover all of your arms. Some rain jackets are lined for those cold, rainy months. If you know the weather is going to be pouring for awhile, it might be better to have a rain jacket along.
If you’re caught unawares, even a poncho will be better than nothing. An emergency rain poncho is compact and easy to carry along when you don’t believe it will rain and you’re caught unawares!
Go outside and play in the right gear for rain
Parents and caregivers need to have gear appropriate to the weather just as much as kids need it. It is a great idea to have a rain poncho ready for any outdoor adventures. Getting outside in all weather means that we have to prepare for it as best we can. If we are traveling, it’s good to remember that even dry locales have a rainy season. If we are serious about getting outside more, the right gear makes it a lot more comfortable. Go outside and go wild for awhile!
